Here’s a tragic story that every parent should share with their teen so that this incident does not occur again. A 35-year-old single mother of New Orleans returned home from class at 7:15pm on Wednesday to find a hooded man hiding in her walk-in closet. The stunned woman grabbed a knife from underneath her pillow and stabbed the man several times. The man died within the hour at a local hospital. The Orleans Parish coroner’s office on Thursday identified him as 17-year-old Tyrone Scott.
It is believed that Scott was secretly visiting the woman’s 15-year-old daughter, according to a relative of the girl. The relative, who asked to remain anonymous in fear of retaliation from the boy’s family, said none of the girl’s family members knew Scott. He added that the girl is too distraught to give information regarding Scott’s visit to the home. “As far as we know, he was an extremely good kid,” the relative said, “and it was just an unfortunate accident. We are hurting for their loss. Everybody’s suffering.”
The mother was taken to NOPD headquarters for questioning and was released. Homicide detectives are investigating the case to determine whether it will be deemed justifiable, NOPD spokesman Frank Robertson III said. “It was a terrible incident and we regret that it happened,” said George Blair, an attorney for the woman. The woman’s relative said she was hysterical on Wednesday night and Thursday. “She is traumatized. She will never recover from this,” he said. “We weren’t raised to take people’s lives. It was not intentional. She felt she had to defend herself and she did.” The woman’s family has expressed interest in talking to Scott’s family. “Our hearts really do go out to them,” the relative said. “We are really hurting for them.”
